During Cityscape 2013, Nakheel announced its plan to eventually develop the remnants of the Palm Deira project – which was cancelled in the 2008 financial crisis aftermath. This project is now called Deira Islands – and it consists of a 15.3 sq. km waterfront city. According to Nakheel’s masterplan, there are a total of four islands which will be used for development of hospitality and residential projects. The ultimate plan forsees the development of 23,000 hotel rooms and 31,000 residential units.
In Q1 2014, Nakheel announced that it had put up for sale about 12.4 million sq. ft. of prime land on Deira Islands – a total of 94 plots ranging from 50,000 – 670,000 q. ft. For now, only plots in two of the four islands are being sold. There are a total of 500 plots in the masterplan for these two islands.
On the 20th April, 2014: Nakheel announced that it had appointed AE7 for design and supervision of the project including services such as master-planning, parcelization and infrastructure design.
The Deira Night Souq is set to open before the end of 2018
By the end of next year there’ll be a brand new spot where you can haggle for all your spices, souvenirs and scarves.
Construction is underway on the Dhs 1.57 billion Deira Night Souq, which, when it opens on the Deira Islands, will be the biggest night market in the world.
Comprising four man-made islands located adjacent to Dubai’s Deira district, this development will offer relaxed island living to its lucky residents, as well as boosting Dubai’s tourism industry. On completion there will be 21 kilometres of beaches, beachfront hotel resorts, residential communities, a shopping mall, a waterfront night market and a large amphitheatre that will accommodate 30,000 people. The island will enjoy impressive views of Dubai skyline and across the Arabian Gulf.
